Vaginal/Pelvic Steaming:
Healing
Rejuvenating
Birthing our Creativity and Medicine

What is Pelvic Steaming?

Pelvic steaming, V-steaming, vaginal steaming, Yoni steaming, Bajos (Mayan) or Bakera (Indonesia) is a practice that has been used for centuries by healers and midwives worldwide to support women's health and healing. Traditionally used for post-partum and post menses clearing of the uterus, today it is making a resurgence as a useful tool for helping to support and resolve many issues that those with female anatomy face. It is a practice that allows and encourages all those who carry or who have carried a uterus to connect deeply with their own powerful source of creativity, awakening one's unique inner potency to make manifest that which is waiting to be birthed into the world.

Why Steam?

A better question is, why hasn't vaginal steaming been a part of our standard womb wellness practice?

Vaginal steaming has been in practice all around the world for generations. Plants are carefully chosen to meet the needs of each woman, and are then infused in hot water, much like making a tea. The wisdom and medicine of the herbs are absorbed into the permeable tissue in your vaginal region via the rising steam, and initiate increased circulation to the area. The warmth, along with the herbal constituents, support the health and well being of the labia, vaginal canal, cervix, uterus and ovaries. Melting into this calming and softening somatic experience also initiates a deep connection to a part of our body that too often gets numbed, suppressed and traumatized.

Although still not adopted widely by medical professionals, there are many places in the world where it has been used, and is still being used, as a method of womb care for reproductive health and healing. You can peruse the map (click here) compiled by Keli Garza of the Peristeam Hydrotherapy Institute to see the many countries that have embraced this mode of honoring and caring for our wombs.

Vaginal steaming is an exciting new arena of care, and I am excited to be part of this growing movement.

With the resurgence of steaming, female bodied folk (and men as well, although that is not the work I do) have been able to resolve many issues that medical doctors have been unable to address without resorting to pharmaceutical and/or surgical methods.

**Please note: steaming and any other approach listed here are not intended to replace medical advice and care. If you are facing a serious medical issue and have acute concerns, please contact your health care provider.**
